The main thing you need to know about GNS3 is that it is meant to be used by network professionals. You see, this free and open source application is a graphical network simulator. Network professionals who get GNS3 can use it to design complex network topologies. They can build, design and test networks in a risk-free virtual environment.

GNS3 is available for all major operating systems. It is available for Microsoft’s Windows operating system, it is available for Apple’s Mac OS X, and it is also available for Linux. Install guides for all these platforms are available online, on GNS3’s Community page – the GNS3 Jungle.

I am going to bring up that a setup wizard will help you install GNS3 on Windows PC, but only so that I can list the components you will be asked to install: WinPCAP, Wireshark, SolarWindows Response, Dynamips, QEMU, VPCS, Cpulimit, GNS3, and SuperPutty.

When you’re done installing GNS3 on your Windows PC, your default browser will launch and take you to a “Welcome to GNS3” webpage. When you launch GNS3 for the first time, a Getting Started prompt will show up, welcome you to GNS3, and give you a helping hand, just in case you’re not sure where to start. By default, a New Project prompt will show up when you launch GNS3; you can use it to create a new project, open an existing project, view and open recent projects.

More than 2 million network professionals around the world use GNS3. Why? Because it has lots to offer: design and build networks of any size; run simulations in a risk-free virtual environment; configure a variety of devices; leverage existing hardware by connecting to any real network; get feedback from other network professionals; and more

GNS3 is free and open source software released under a GNU GPL (General Public License).

GNS3 is a must for network professionals. It will help them build, design and test networks.
